Every week there are a few matchups that catch my attention. I use PFF’s advanced statistics to give an in-depth look at possible fantasy starters and duds. This week I focus on four matchups that I think could provide interesting results including a flex play you may not be considering.
Eric Decker vs. Brandon Flowers
If you ever wonder how big a role a system plays in a cornerback’s success, look no further than Brandon Flowers. Last season playing for the Chiefs Flowers was one of the worst starting corners in the league. This year, in a new system, Flowers is flourishing. Flowers has been targeted 20 times but has allowed just 98 yards. He is yet to allow a TD and currently has the highest cornerback rating on profootballfocus.com.
Last week Eric Decker had a decent game tallying 48 yards and a TD on 10 targets. Overall he is off to a rather slow start. Decker is on pace for 816 yards and 8 TDs in his first year with the Jets. If Decker continues to flirt with double-digit targets each week I can see an improvement on his overall numbers. He is on pace for 100 targets but needs to get that number up closer to 130 to be fantasy relevant.
Bottom Line: Not this week Decker owners. Not only are you dealing with QB Geno Smith’s inconsistency but he has to face an elite cornerback. If Decker is your only flex option this may be a long week for you. I expect less than 70 yards, no more than five catches, and zero TDs.
