Every Tuesday I will be bringing you the NFL players who have somehow flown under the fantasy radar and are owned in far too few leagues given their production and/or ceiling. Injuries and byes are inevitable, too.
Here are some players that are on quite a few waiver wires out there that simply shouldn’t be.
Quarterback
Alex Smith, Kansas City Chiefs (Yahoo 67% owned; ESPN 73.5%) – 90% FAAB
Remember when Smith wasn’t even an afterthought in the fantasy world?
Last five weeks: higher completion percentage than Peyton Manning, four more touchdown passes than Tom Brady despite 73 fewer attempts, and a greater aDOT than Drew Brees.
Smith obviously benefited from a huge day by Jamaal Charles (his aDOT was only 2.5, yet he averaged 24.4 yards per reception), but a hot quarterback who rarely beats himself has significant value if you roster risk laden players elsewhere. Every game is going to meaningful for Kansas City, and with the defense looking a bit more vulnerable, Smith is a borderline QB1 in almost all formats for the rest of this season.
Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins (Yahoo 11% owned; ESPN 3.0%) – 75% FAAB
He has the starting gig for the rest of the season and has a chance to earn himself a future contract with a few solid performances. His future contractual status doesn’t really help you, but the he way to earn a big contract is to put up big numbers, which does help you. He threw 45 passes on Sunday, totaling 381 yards and three touchdowns against the Falcons in his first start of the season. He completed a pass to nine different players, targeting four players at least seven times in the process. I know I know, the Falcons defense isn’t exactly the NFL standard for excellence. But you know what? It’s very possible that they are better than either of the remaining defenses (Cowboys and Giants) on the Redskins schedule. Coach Shanahan is trying to prove a point, which means plenty of pass plays and thus plenty of value for Cousins owners for the rest of 2013.
