Rivers is pushing the snaps pace

Welcome to Snaps, Pace, and Stats, which examines trends in snap totals and no-huddle usage. This year I’ll be looking at individual players on Fridays in Advanced Matchup Plays, and it will appear both here and on RotoGrinders. Before that, however, it is helpful to take a 30,000-foot view of the upcoming games, in the hope of finding out which ones will be played on fertile fantasy soil.

Philadelphia at Carolina

When these teams met last year, they produced 143 snaps, 66 points, and a lopsided score. Things should be different because a now-healthy Cam Newton can run again and is under siege less often. The snap counts should remain elevated, however. The Eagles’ pace ranks second (23.6 seconds per snap), they again lead the league in no-huddle rate (70 percent), and are tops in plays-surrendered (71.2 per game).

The Panthers just piled up 72 snaps in Seattle last week, and are themselves allowing the second-most plays per game (69.4). They also have regularly been pushing the pace, as discussed below in No-Huddle Notes, and it’s a good bet we will see some hurry-up from them on Sunday. It may not always be pretty, as both teams do have talent on defense, but the matchup sets up for a high-volume affair
