Redskins: RJF added to D

PFF-headlinesOnly a few teams have ended the 2014 season with one team and have already found a new team. Washington already added Xavier Nixon who was waived by the Colts, and now they’ve added another former Colt in Ricky Jean-Francois.

Last year Francois was the Colts’ backup defensive end, but he ended up playing in 58% of the team’s defensive snaps due to their heavy rotation as well as Arthur Jones missing time. While his rate statistics weren’t impressive, he helped make up for that with some big plays — tackles for losses in the run game, some impressive pressures where he was quickly able to disrupt the quarterback, and a few batted passes.

He lands with Washington where their current G.M., Scot McCloughan, was the man who drafted him in San Francisco. He goes to a team that used a heavy defensive line rotation throughout the year with no player exceeding 600 total snaps. Their lineman with the most snaps was Jarvis Jenkins who is a free agent, so Jean-Francois could very well be taking Jenkins place.

Even if Washington adds more talent to the defensive line, Jean-Francois should have a decent chance at starting in their base defense. Jason Hatcher and Chris Baker should continue to take snaps in the nickel defense, but the new addition could rotate in there as well. While we won’t be talking about this move as one of the best in free agency, it is a step in the right direction for the Washington defensive line.
