Packers plan to use Randall more in the slot

  • After a down year in 2016, the Green Bay Packers are looking for cornerback Damarious Randall to bounce back by moving him inside to the slot, or what defensive coordinator Dom Capers calls the “star” position, as reported by Rob Demovsky of ESPN.
  • The Packers have lost their most-used slot cornerback each of the past two seasons in Casey Hayward after 2015, and Micah Hyde after 2016. They will count on three corners from the same 2015 rookie class and a veteran returning to Green Bay after a short stint with Jacksonville to make up their cornerbacks.
  • Randall’s best weeks came in Week 1 at Jacksonville (92.0 overall, top-graded corner) and then in the Wild Card matchup against the New York Giants (86.9 overall, second-highest corner).
  • While lined up in the slot last season, in only 28 passing snaps, Randall cut his passer rating allowed on each side in half compared to lining up outside. His 61.5 passer rating allowed from the left slot cornerback position was the best by any Packers defensive back with at least 10 cover snaps while lined up there.
