Lions' additions should allow Ebron to spend time in the slot

  • Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press wrote Wednesday that Detroit Lions tight end Eric Ebron believes he is in a better position to succeed with the offseason additions at tight end.
  • This offseason the Lions added two more traditional inline tight ends — free agent Darren Fells, who played 82 percent of his 2016 snaps inline (69 percent of snaps spent as a blocker), and fourth-round pick Michael Roberts, who played 67 percent of his snaps either inline or in the backfield. Roberts boasts a massive 6-foot-4, 270-pound frame.
  • Often viewed as more of an “F” tight end, Ebron should be able to play more in the slot in 2017 and focus on his game as a receiver. Last season, Ebron played in the slot on just 24 percent of snaps.
  • Since entering the league in 2014, Ebron has improved his receiving grade in each season and in 2016 earned the 19th-best receiving grade among tight ends at 72.3.
