Cousins extension talks reportedly ‘really positive’

  • According to the Washington Post, Washington QB Kirk Cousins told reporters Wednesday that extension talks with the team have been “really positive.” Cousins said “I’m not in a hurry, they’re not in a hurry, so we’ll see how things go.”
  • If Cousins and Washington can’t agree on a long-term deal by the July 15 deadline, Cousins will play the 2018 season under the franchise tag for the second straight year, earning just under $24 million fully guaranteed.
  • Over the last two seasons Cousins has been one of the most productive QBs in the NFL. In 2015, Cousins earned a PFF overall grade of 81.5, which ranked 15th, and he cracked the top 10 last season, ranking eighth with an overall PFF grade of 85.9.
  • A big reason for this is Cousins accuracy, as he ranked eighth last season with an adjusted completion percentage of 76.7 after ranking second in 2015 with a 78.5.

If Cousins plays well yet again without Garcon and DJax, and I expect him to, the Redskins are gonna really be wishing they’d signed him for $20-22 mill a year over 5-6 years when they had the chance a couple years ago.

I don’t think you can fault the Redskins for their approach to this point. Cousins was not a proven commodity a couple of years ago so giving him a 5 or 6 year deal could have resulted in the same kind of disaster the Bears had when they gave Cutler 150 mill with a long term contract. I expect both sides now realize that they are a good fit going forward from here so an extended deal will get done.

I don’t see Kirk Cousins being that desperate but maybe Frisco will be the next pit stop for Brock Osweiler.
