Cardinals QB Carson Palmer unlikely to throw much this offseason

  • Palmer finished the 2016 season as the 17th-ranked quarterback with an 80.1 PFF overall grade — his worst grade since 2013. Although slightly above-average, his grade displayed a significant drop-off from the 92.9 mark he posted in 2015 when he ranked fourth among QBs.
  • The 13-year veteran was under pressure on 38.5 percent of his dropbacks last season and saw his QB rating drop from 100.1 to 62.4 on such plays. Behind an offensive line that ranked 28th in pass-blocking efficiency, Palmer was the fifth-most sacked QB after being taken down 40 times.
  • Palmer has seen his QB rating on deep passes decrease over the last three years, including a steep drop from 96.8 in 2015 to 64.9 in 2016.

When the head coach says he needs to rest the starting QB – and the season isn’t even underway – well that is just a huge red flag in my opinion. So many pass routes now are based on intricate timing between QB and receiver. If Carson is allowed to rest (rust?) he certainly won’t have that timing down and the passing game will stall.
