- Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton threw the football for the first time Monday since shoulder surgery. Newton underwent the surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder during the offseason. He told panthers.com that “there’s no doubt” he will be “100 percent” for the start of training camp.
- Newton’s overall PFF grade of 79.5 last season was the worst of his career and ranked 18th among 34 qualifying quarterbacks. This was a huge disappointment after the 2015 season where he ranked second among all quarterbacks with a PFF overall grade of 94.0, which was the highest of his career.
- Newton’s fall off in 2016 was not just limited to his overall grades as his passer rating when passing from a clean pocket dipped tremendously. In 2015, he ranked third in 2015 with a passer rating of 113.1 compared to 90.9 last season which ranked 29th, when passing from a clean pocket. Another area Newton struggled with last season compared to his 2015 season was deep passing; Newton ranked third in 2015 with a passer rating of 107.4 on deep passes compared to 87.3 last season which ranked 17th.
