PFF Week: Back East, Week 1

PFF-Week-Back-EastIt’s your last chance to get caught up on the happenings at PFF before the next slate of games is upon us and our new ‘PFF Week’ posts provide quick access to the week that was. The ‘Out East’ edition covers all things pertaining to the AFC and NFC East divisions for a one-stop Saturday shop built to keep you in the loop and on top of your football-watching game.

Going into week 1 of the season the teams of the AFC and NFC East have a lot of questions to answer. Can the Patriots’ be dominant in a weak division with a complete offensive overhaul? Who is the favorite in the always-tough NFC East? Does RG III take a step back, Does Tanehill take a step forward and can a pair of rookie QB’s with the Bills and Jets make a difference? Some of these questions are answered in our coverage from this week but all will be answered as the season plays out.

We covered a lot of ground this week, and throughout the preseason. Here are links to the content that involved the teams back East:

Preseason is Done

The final week of the preseason was covered extensively by our analysts in the Re-Focused articles. The Eagles’ pass rush capability with Brandon Graham and Connor Barwin, the poor play of the Giants’ cornerbacks, and one of PFF’s lowest grade players the past few seasons, Vaughan Martin’s, steady improvement against the Saints were all discussed.

Nathan Jahnke took a look around the league and pointed out some interesting stat-bits about guys who proved their worth and stuck around, even though they weren’t expected too in his latest edition of 32 Observations.  And, the Eagles, Redskins, Patriots, Jets and Dolphins all had players make Khaled Elsayed’s PFF Team of the Preseason. Khaled also put together our Cutdown Blog that highlighted who became casualties before the season began: AFC East | NFC East and Steve Palazzolo shared some final preseason thoughts.

Beyond the preseason coverage and the walk into the Week 1 action, we’ve posted a number of other pieces worth your read, including Sam Monson’s first Analysis Notebook of the season, breaking down a key play in the Thursday Night opener. In Palazzolo’s Pitch, Steve talks Patriots’ backup linebackers and exactly who is going to step up behind Jerod Mayo. Steve’s second ‘Pitch’ was a helpful guide to anyone who wants to understand how our grading works (and why it is important), the current state of analytics in the NFL, and Grades vs. Stats.

Something that has been asked for many times over has finally become a reeality here at PFF as Khaled Elsayed organized lists of our highest-graded games and seasons ever — for every position! Have a look through our PFF Page of Fame to see which players nabbed a spot among the best we’ve seen.
