Patriots Sign Darrelle Revis

revis-eUnlike the island in LOST, we know exactly where to find Revis Island in 2014, as the Patriots inked shutdown corner Darrelle Revis to a one-year, $12 million deal. There’s talk the Pats are eyeing a long-term deal with Revis, but for now he is locked up through next season.

The Revis saga began last season when the Bucs gave him a whopping $16 million for last season, despite the fact he was recovering from an ACL tear that ended his 2012 season. Revis wasn’t head and shoulders above the crowd at corner last season, but he was still arguably the league’s best.

With Tampa under a new regime that brings back Tampa-2 concepts, Revis and his hefty contract were no longer a fit. The Bucs released Revis on Wednesday after a failed attempt to trade him on Day 1 of free agency.

New England signing Revis is just another in a series of moves’s Chris Wesseling has deemed the “AFC Arms Race.” With the Broncos signing DeMarcus Ware, T.J. Ward, and former Pat Aqib Talib, New England kept pace by landing a future Hall of Famer with plenty of tread left on his tires.

From a statistical standpoint, less is often more with Revis. He’s not going to rack up a ton of tackles, but that’s not a bad thing. Tackles are a matter of opportunity, and simply put, because Revis is so good at his job in coverage, he does not get a lot of opportunities for tackles.

Last season, Revis saw 63 targets thrown into his coverage. That’s a little more than half of Jerraud Powers’ league-high 122 targets. While Revis may have marginal value in CB-required leagues, it’s unlikely he’ll be rosterable in most IDP formats.

That being said, the impact of Revis will help those around him in New England. With his shutdown ability as a shadow corner, Revis will give the Pats’ defensive line more time to get after the quarterback. Expect a slight uptick in sack production from Chandler Jones and Rob Ninkovich.
