Every week there are a few matchups that catch my attention. I use PFF’s advanced statistics to give an in-depth look at possible fantasy starters and duds. This week I focus on four matchups that I think could provide interesting results. There are two matchups that I think could provide big dividends as a flex play.
Jeremy Maclin vs. Patrick Peterson
These guys should be locked onto each other for a majority of the game. I featured Jeremy Maclin in my Week six matchup article. I questioned whether or not quarterback Nike Foles would continue targeting Maclin at such a high rate without great success. That week Maclin saw his targets dip to three. This is his next outing and he has a dangerous matchup in Patrick Peterson.
Patrick Peterson is one of those players who everyone thinks is elite, but he isn't. Only six cornerbacks have allowed a higher quarterback rating than Peterson. He has a YPT (yards per target) average of 8.09 and has allowed four touchdowns. For all of his shortcomings he is still a very dangerous cornerback. He is a ball-hawking cornerback that hasn’t had his hands on a pass this season.
Bottom Line: This is a really tough game to predict. Peterson has a habit of allowing big plays and Maclin has big play ability. I am worried about Maclin getting the amount of targets he needs to produce. If Foles is losing confidence in Maclin, Peterson won’t make him want to increase targets to Maclin. Foles has been intercepted four times while targeting Maclin. I predict that Maclin sees less than seven targets. I also predict that Peterson intercepts a pass. Overall I would recommend NOT starting Maclin this week.
