ReFo: Ravens @ Dolphins, Week 14
After an ugly and penalty-filled game last week, the Baltimore Ravens looked like they were in for more of the same yesterday. The defense committed three offsides penalties in the first quarter and missed 12 tackles in the game. The Ravens pulled away in the fourth quarter however, with two touchdown drives and a dominant pass rush on defense.
The Miami Dolphins’ offensive line had a terrible outing against an excellent Ravens defensive front, and will need to rebound next week in New England. The loss leaves the Dolphins on the outside of the playoff picture for the moment, and will look to avoid falling to 7-7 next week.
Here are the notable performances from the game.
Baltimore Ravens – Performances of Note
Elvis Dumervil, LB: +4.6
Breakdown: Dumervil earned his best grade of an excellent season, and now ranks fourth among all 3-4 OLB’s with a +19.3 cumulative grade for the season. The former Bronco was dominant pass rushing vs. RT Dallas Thomas, with three sacks and two hits.
Signature Plays: Dumervil had sacks on each of the Dolphins final two drives. Each sack came on a first down that set up a 2nd-and-long, and Miami was unable to pick up a first down afterwards each time.
Marshall Yanda, RG: +3.9
Breakdown: Another excellent display from Yanda, who now leads our guard rankings by a wide margin. Yanda has a green grade in every single game of 2014, and his +41.3 cumulative grade is nearly double that of Joel Bitonio (+22.6), our second-ranked guard.
Signature Stats: Yanda allowed a hit and a hurry in 35 snaps in pass protection, and earned a +2.8 grade as a run blocker. Yanda has yet to earn a negative run blocking grade this season.
Daryl Smith, LB: +1.8
Breakdown: After a tough start to the season, with a -6.9 overall grade in his first six games, Smith has earned a positive grade in every game since and he earned positive marks in run defense, pass coverage and as a pass rusher against the Dolphins.
Signature Stats: Smith recorded a pressure on his only blitz, and a pass defense the only time he was targeted in coverage.
Miami Dolphins – Performances of Note
Offensive Line: -18.1
Breakdown: Every single member of the Dolphins offensive line earned a red grade yesterday, including backup LG Shelley Smith, who played just 20 snaps. Right tackle Dallas Thomas allowed four sacks and a QB hit, and guard Mike Pouncey (-4.4) allowed a hit and four hurries while also committing twi penalties.
Signature Stats: The offensive line combined for a -7.8 run blocking grade, committed four penalties and allowed 20 pressures.
Lamar Miller, HB: +1.7
Breakdown: Despite the poor play of the blockers in front of him, Miller earned his best grade of the season. Miller forced eight missed tackles on just 12 carries, and 32 of his 53 yards came after contact.
Signature Stats: Miller’s eight broken tackles was a season high. His previous best was four broken tackles vs. Jacksonville.
Randy Starks, DT: -3.5
Breakdown: Starks did not record a single pressure as a pass rusher, and earned a -3.1 grade in run defense. His -3.5 overall grade was the worst of any Dolphins defender, as he struggled against the Ravens’ excellent interior offensive linemen.
Signature Stats: Over the past three games, Starks has earned a -12.8 run defense grade, and has not recorded a single pressure as a pass rusher.
PFF Game Ball
Elvis Dumervil was too much for the Dolphins to handle, and earns the game ball.
