  • ESPN's Adam Schefter reports that Cincinnati Bengals tight end Tyler Eifert will miss “multiple weeks” with a back injury. It’s the same injury that cost him Weeks 16-17 of the 2016 season. However, Eifert is not expected to undergo surgery at this time.
  • When healthy, Eifert has the potential to be one of the best tight ends in the league. In both 2015 and 2016, Eifert was PFF’s fifth-highest-graded tight end with PFF overall grades of 87.2 and 86.3, respectively.
  • The Bengals will miss Eifert’s presence, especially in the red zone. Since 2015, Eifert’s 16 red-zone touchdowns is the most among tight ends and his receiver rating in the red zone (passer rating generated when targeted) of 102.8 ranks seventh of 17 tight ends with at least 20 targets.
  • The Bengals will also miss Eifert’s ability to stretch the field. In 2016, Eifert posted a catch rate of 80.0 percent on passes of 20 yards or more, the league’s best mark among tight ends. He continued his form this season, having caught the one deep target sent his way.
