49ers LB Navorro Bowman back to full speed at OTAs

  • San Francisco 49ers LB NaVorro Bowman, who missed the majority of the 2016 season with an Achilles injury, is “back to full-speed” during the 49ers’ offseason program, according to the team’s official website.
  • San Francisco’s new regime has looked to bolster the linebacking corps this offseason, signing Malcolm Smith to a sizable deal in free agency and trading up to select Alabama’s Reuben Foster at the end of the first round in the NFL draft. Bowman, however, is embracing the competition, saying, “I won’t be on the sideline, let me tell you that right now.”
  • While it remains to be seen whether Bowman will ever return to the dominant overall level of play he displayed from 2011-13 after suffering two major injuries in the past three years, he has still been one of the league’s best run stuffers when healthy in recent seasons.
  • Among 63 linebackers with at least 400 run snaps since 2015, Bowman’s 11.6 percent run-stop rate ranks fourth.
