PFF Week: Back East, Week 2

PFF-Week-Back-EastIt’s your last chance to get caught up on the happenings at PFF before the next slate of games is upon us, and our new ‘PFF Week’ posts provide quick access to the week that was. The ‘Back East’ edition covers all things pertaining to the AFC and NFC East divisions for a one-stop Saturday shop built to keep you in the loop and on top of your football-watching game.

Looking for games settled with some intense last-second action? Perhaps you were in the mood for a low scoring defensive oriented affair? No? Well how about a fast-paced, up-tempo, catch me if you can event? Oh, you wanted that in primetime? Yeah, the NFL provided that for you in Week 1. Lots of great storylines, action, coaching debuts, rivalries and near upsets all to open the season. We here at PFF had all that covered and much more to open up the 2013 campaign.

So before you start that autumn yard work or catch up on some rest so you can be ready to root on your favorite teams this weekend why not take a glimpse at how things fared on the East side of town?

Week 1 Wrap

While the balance of power may have shifted out West in both conferences the NFC East provided some great storylines to open the season. Just how would Chip Kelly’s offensive style fare in a real game for a full sixty minutes of play? How was Robert Griffin’s knee going to hold up having to elude pressure with defenders closing in on him? Could the Cowboys actually win a home game against a division rival? Is it possible that age and injuries have sapped the strength of the Giants defense?

The AFC East brought some intrigue to the table as the Patriots found themselves challenged by the Bills with Doug Marrone and a rookie quarterback at the helm. The Dolphins took advantage of the Browns shatter point on the offensive line and the Jets snatched victory from the jaws of defeat with a maligned rookie quarterback also.

All of that is captured right here with weekly ReFocused series:

ReFo: NE @ BUF, Week 1
ReFo: MIA @ CLE, Week 1
ReFo: TB @ NYJ, Week 1
ReFo: NYG @ DAL, Week 1
ReFo: PHI @ WAS, Week 1

After the dust settled PFF offered its PFF Team of Week 1 to take in as well as the ‘Had a Bad Day Team, Week 1’ so that loyal readers get a better understanding of how the players on their teams fared. One of the highlights of the week is the 32 Observations discussion where Nathan Jahnke delivers an interesting take on each team from a statistical standpoint.

Other points of interest include a brief recap from Khaled Elsayed with his First-Rounders In Focus: Week 1 as well as Steve Palazzolo’s Race for Rookie of the Year with the top rookie representing the AFC/ NFC East being a bit of a surprise. Injuries are a fact of life in the NFL which means another installment of Injury Report: Next Man Up, Week 2 from Peter Damilatis. Lastly, Palazzolo’s Pitch: Blindsided has the bulk of the article covering Cameron Wake and a strong effort by Sheldon Richardson of the Jets in the initial week of the season.

Looking Ahead to Week 2

The Jets and Patriots got an early jump on Week 2 with their soggy Thursday night event which was previewed with a Three to Focus On article well ahead of kickoff. PFF also had the ReFocused article on the game available the next morning so that those who didn’t get to see the game could get a better feeling for what they missed. For a fantastic breakdown of a key Patriots play in the game check out Sam Monson’s Analysis Notebook which essentially walks you through the event with no detail overturned.

That said there are still games to be played this weekend and you can catch the Three to Focus previews on them right here:

3TFO: Dolphins @ Colts, Week 2
3TFO: Panthers @ Bills, Week 2
3TFO: Chargers @ Eagles, Week 2
3TFO: Redskins @ Packers, Week 2
