The first quarter of the fantasy football season has come and gone, but whether you're 4-0, 0-4 or somewhere in between there is always room for improvement. The waiver wire is clearly the primary source for this improvement.
While the injury epidemic of the first three weeks has slowed considerably, there are unexpected players still climbing their respective depth charts and becoming ever-more fantasy viable. Plus, the waiver wire deepens this week. Week 4 saw six teams – all possessing high-quality fantasy talent – on bye but Week 5 only features two.
Deeper leagues present different waiver-wire challenges than their 10- or 12- team counterparts but the strategy is the same: Do research, make note of which breakout performances were one-week phenomena or signs of even bigger things to come and making claims quickly. The pickings may be slimmer; that's the only difference. With this in mind, here are the top four waiver-wire pickups in fantasy football for Week 5, especially geared toward those of you managing teams in leagues of 14, 16, 18 or more teams.
