Week 4 waiver-wire pickups for IDP leagues

Welcome to the Week 4 IDP Waiver Wire, where I’ll be imparting some advice to help you find the players than can push your roster from playoff contenders to championship hopefuls. We’re digging a little deeper and being a shade more speculative this week as we wait for scoring trends to emerge, so get ready to line up some of the 2016 and 2017 rookie classes as your pickups heading into Week 4.

Defensive linemen

Takkarist McKinley, Atlanta Falcons

Last year saw the Falcons eighth overall pick in 2015, Vic Beasley, find his groove in the NFL to the tune of a 15.5-sack season. Unfortunately for Atlanta, Beasley suffered a slight hamstring tear in Week 2, and is now sidelined for at least a month, but it has opened the door for their 2017 first-round rookie pass-rusher, McKinley, to show why he was rated so highly, and earn some extended playing time.

McKinley himself didn’t have the healthiest of preseasons, having undergone shoulder surgery back in March, and he only saw the field for 14-of-67 snaps in Week 1, although he did chart two quarterback hurries in just 13 pass-rushes. His efficiency in getting to the quarterback has continued through games two and three, which has piqued my fantasy interest, as he added a further sack, two hits and seven hurries in 70 further pass-rushes over the next two weeks. He currently ranks 12th in our 4-3 defensive end pass-rush productivity rankings, and knowing the Falcons offense, will often find himself in a game script which forces opponents to chase the score, so I’ve got him penned in as a DL2 in good matchups, and a DL3 in the weaker ones.
