Carlos Hyde, RB, San Francisco 49ers
Hyde’s fantasy stock has been up and down this offseason. At one point, there was speculation he would be released. Then, he reported to camp in the best shape of his career. The latest has Hyde running with the first-team offense as the clear-cut starter. Hyde’s situation is so intriguing due to his depressed ADP, his history of creating yards after contact at the NFL level, and the consistent success running backs have had in new head coach Kyle Shanahan’s running scheme.
The narrative: Hyde is not a fit for Shanahan’s scheme and not his preferred option
The first part of this narrative has some legs. Hyde found success at Ohio State while running behind Urban Meyer’s run scheme, which was geared around inside zone and power blocking. Shanahan’s scheme is primarily an outside zone attack. Hyde is unfamiliar with this style and Shanahan has brought in three hand-picked running backs via free agency and the draft in fourth-rounder Joe Williams, UDFA Matt Breida, and free agent Tim Hightower.
What reports to focus on: 49ers GM John Lynch confirmed that Shanahan convinced him to select Williams in round four, but Williams has gotten off to a slow start this offseason. This is good news for Hyde. More important, you’ll want to read more reports like this one about Hyde — directly from Shanahan.
