At ProFootballFocus we watch every snap of every game and use that data to gain an edge at fantasy football. One of the ways we use that information is to follow pre-snap wide receiver vs. cornerback positional alignments. This allows us to identify cornerbacks who are asked to shadow top receivers, rather than just arbitrarily assigning them the moniker of being a shutdown corner because of the perceived status and ability.
By studying these defensive tendencies, we can make predictions about the on-field matchups for the upcoming slate of games and use that insight to alter our fantasy projections. The data below is a representation of our findings.
Key
Shadow – The number of games a cornerback has followed a receiver around the field.
WR1/WR2/WR3 – This is the percentage of snaps that a player has been aligned, pre-snap, with a team's WR1/WR2/WR3
Other – The percentage of snaps a cornerback was not aligned with a WR1/WR2/WR3
Slot – The percentage of snaps a cornerback lined up in the slot
Cov – A player's PFF coverage grade. Above 5.0 is very good, 4.9 to 1.0 is good, 0.9 to -2.0 is average, -2.1 to -6.0 is poor, and below -6.1 is bad.
TA – The number of passes thrown into a player's coverage.
% Ct – The percentage of passes completed into a player's coverage.
Yds – The total yardage allowed.
