Alabama-LSU grades: Tide dominate in trenches, running game
Here are the top takeaways and highest-graded players from Alabama’s 30-16 win against LSU.
–Running back Leonard Fournette (0.2) rushed 19 times in this game for 31 yards, 18 of which came on one carry late in the game, but he still didn’t actually grade negatively because it really wasn’t his fault. Fournette forced two missed tackles and gained 30 of those 31 yards after contact.
–Bama was winning the battle at the line of scrimmage (and then some), so quarterback Brandon Harris (-3.4) was having similar issues to Fournette, but he had a bad day passing the ball, too, other than a couple of nice deep shots. Harris completed just six passes all game, and only 30 percent of the passes when he had no pressure to deal with.
–Things didn’t get a whole lot better for LSU on the other side of the ball, with even star defensive tackle Davon Godchaux (-1.3) struggling to anchor consistently against the run and being controlled more often than not by Alabama’s offensive line. He could only notch a single hurry over 24 pass rushes.
SS Jamal Adams (+2.5)
DE Lewis Neal (+1.5)
CB Dwayne Thomas (+1.4)
DT Frank Herron (+0.8)
DT Tashwan Bower (+0.8)
Alabama Crimson Tide
–While Fournette was struggling on the other side, both Derrick Henry (+3.0) and Kenyan Drake (+2.8) were tearing up the Tigers. They combined for 278 rushing yards on 48 carries, forcing 13 combined missed tackles. Henry in particular was a monster, earning a +6 rushing grade despite a bad fumble in the fourth quarter.
–The Alabama offensive line was dominant in this game, with four of the five starters earning strong grades, as did Michael Nysewander as an extra blocker. That group allowed only two total pressures in the game.
–The defense was full of strong performances, but perhaps the best came from the seven snaps of Tim Williams up front. In seven pass rushes, Williams earned a sack, hit and three hurries, which was more than any other player in the game.
DE Tim Williams (+3.8)
LT Cam Robinson (+3.7)
RB Derrick Henry (+3.0)
LB Shaun Dion Hamilton (+3.0)
RG Alphonse Taylor (+2.9)
