2015 Free Agency Reactions: Day 7

new-logo-vert-400x300-dropThe big money deals are done and the top players are almost entirely off the market, but there are still plenty of free agents out there and no team's roster is complete.

(We’ll be updating every hour or two, so keep coming back to see our take on the free agency developments.)

19:15 SIGNING! It's been a few hours since we had much in the way of news, but per Albert Breer there's a new signing to talk about! The Chicago Bears are adding offensive lineman Vlad Ducasse. A second round draft pick back in 2010, Ducasse showed promise in limited action as a rookie, but has struggled since.

16:17 We've reached the stage of Free Agency when there are bargains to be had, talented veterans who are capable of performing at a high level, yet won't break the bank to sign. Our own PFF_Gordon takes a look at a few such Free Agent Bargains.

16:10 SIGNINGS! Those two teams weren't satisfied with signing a big man, they were also after someone more fleet of foot. For the Texans it was former Jaguars WR Cecil Shorts, who joins on a two year deal. Shorts was the Jaguars best receiver in 2012 and 2013, posting a cumulative +0.4 receiving grade, but a disappointing 2014 season coupled with the emergence of a trio of rookie receivers, left him expendable in Jacksonville. Meanwhile the Browns have added long-time Packer CB Tramon Williams to bolster their secondary. Williams is another who had a down year in 2014, allowing a 64.3% completion rate and eight touchdowns on passes into his coverage, however despite those negative stats he still finished the season with a +2.7 coverage grade.

15:54 SIGNINGS! The Cleveland Browns and Houstan Texans have each sought veteran help to strengthen the centre of their defense; DT Randy Starks joins the Browns on a two year deal, as per Ian Rapoport; while NT Vince Wilfork reports that he is joining the Texans. Starks will likely move back to end in Cleveland's three-man front, a role he last played in 2011, when he notched five sacks and 28 total pressures on his way to a +4.0 overall grade. There will be no role change required for Wilfork, he excels as a run stuffer (+15.0 against the run in 2014) and that's exactly what he will do in Houston. With Wilfork eating blocks, life is about to get a little easier for J.J. Watt, which is a frightening prospect for the rest of the AFC South.

15:40 SIGNINGS! We've had a few signings today so it's time to get caught up. We will start with a pair of safeties; Kurt Coleman has signed with the Panthers as per Mike Garafolo, while Jeron Johnson goes to Washington. Coleman was solid in coverage (+3.5) for the Chiefs last year and should pair with Tre Boston to replace Thomas DeCoud in Carolina. Johnson played just 275 snaps in four seasons in Seattle, but had a +1.1 grade in his only start (Week 10 last season) and has the opportunity to compete for a role on a secondary unit that struggled in 2014.

08:05 After a frantic start (assisted by team's making full use of the legal tampering period) Free Agency hit a lull over the weekend. Greg Jennings was cut, Reggie Bush landed in San Francisco, Perrish Cox in Tennessee and Michael Johnson returned to Cincinnati. To get a complete rundown of all the signings so far, as well as a look at those free agents who are still available, check out the PFF 2015 Free Agency Tracker.

08:00 We mentioned the PFF Premium subscription in the opener above, but this is the point in the free agency period when a look at the numbers becomes even more handy — when your favorite team is looking at the little-known player and you want to see how he stacks up, we’ve got you covered. Our Premium Stats cover every player that has seen the field since 2007 so you’ll have more than enough information to satisfy your curiosity.
