Is Dion Jordan a possible solution at LB for Dolphins?

PFF-headlinesIn his Monday presser, Miami defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle mentioned that he would not be game-planning anything specific for currently suspended DE, Dion Jordan and S, Rashad Jones in Sunday’s game against the Chiefs. It still remains to be seen whether either player will be eligible for Sunday, but upon approval of the new league drug policy, both players will be reinstated. Jones will slot back in to his safety position, but where does that leave the 2013 third overall pick?

With a strong defensive line, and a linebacking corps that is already reeling with injuries, perhaps the Dolphins should look at using Jordan to fill the void there. He was an ordinary performer when asked to put his hand in the dirt last year, but excelled in his 46 snaps dropping into pass coverage. He didn’t drop into coverage more than 10 times in any one game, but it’s notable that his three games with the most coverage snaps came against Carolina, New England, and Pittsburgh; three teams that feature their tight ends.

After Philip Wheeler was an unmitigated disaster in coverage last season (-8.2), the Dolphins should be looking high and low for a defender who may be able to stay with some of the league’s tight ends. Travis Kelce has looked every bit a top vertical threat for Alex Smith early this season, so it will be an area of concern as the Miami coaching staff sits down to prepare for Kansas City and maybe Jordan will be a potential solution.

That’s an intriguing and potentially excellent use of Dion Jordan.
