Checking in on the rookies and college prospects for dynasty leagues

As I’ve written many times on this site, rookies are important dynasty pieces to keep tabs on, even after rookie drafts have taken place. They are volatile assets who can be improperly valued very easily. The same can be said of college prospects, where even more variables needs to be considered in order to see the forest through the trees. A keen dynasty player is always aware of the incoming college talent. Intermittently this season, I’ll be checking in on these young dynasty and developmental assets to keep you updated on recent developments, both on and off the field.

The rookies

In the midst of an up-and-down opening six weeks of the season for rookies on the whole, Ezekiel Elliott has established himself as not only one of the top running backs but top overall assets in dynasty leagues. Having just turned 21 years old in August, Elliott is significantly younger than Le’Veon Bell and David Johnson while also having a sizeable edge in surrounding talent on Todd Gurley. The rookie has wasted no time leveraging his natural skill and situational advantages into 705 yards and five touchdowns on 137 carries (5.1 YPC), including an active streak of four straight games in excess of 130 yards. Averaging 70 percent of snaps played, Elliott has been a factor in the passing game as well, catching 11 of 13 targets for an additional 98 yards. I always lean toward a wide receiver-heavy approach, but with Amari Cooper being the only true blue-chip receiver to come out in the last two drafts, Elliott belongs in the first round discussion of dynasty startups.
