The best and worst fantasy WR matchups in Week 4 based on CBs

Don’t believe the hype. Speculation on coverage assignments is often just plain wrong. We don’t guess here at PFF. Each week, I dig through the actual coverage tendencies for all 32 NFL teams and compile this information in the WR/CB Matchup Chart, which is released on Thursday mornings.

Remember, the chart only contains data from the present season. For those who would like to do historic research on coverage responsibilities, I suggest checking out the 2015 Coverage Data Chart. We also released a new feature this week, the Shadow Coverage Matrix, which breaks down every shadow coverage situation for every team throughout the season.

Week 4 matchup upgrades

Steve Smith and Mike Wallace vs. Oakland — Tennessee didn’t do much against the Raiders secondary in Week 3, but the Ravens offense presents a much tougher matchup. Both Wallace and Smith have big-play skillsets, which is exactly what Oakland has struggled against so far this season. Both players move up into the WR3 conversation with Wallace likely to see a lot of Sean Smith, and Steve Smith getting an advantage when he lines up in the slot against D.J. Hayden.

Travis Benjamin and Tyrell Williams vs. New Orleans — You know that percolator song? That’s what goes through my head any time I think about this matchup. Both Benjamin and Williams get upgrades this week against New Orleans. We expect Ken Crawley to shadow Benjamin and Williams to draw shadow coverage from Sterling Moore. Crawley has seen a target on 26 percent of his covered routes, and Moore has been targeted on 23 percent of his routes. That means good things for the Chargers duo. Fire them up with confidence in all formats.

Did you guys sync the WR/CB chart with the chart found in the DFS tool yet? Numbers were inconsistent last week. Which one tells the best story?

    • geo2209

The one under Charts and Info seems best. It had DJax on Eli Apple for last week, not Janoris Jenkins who was not recommended in Matchups article. DJax had a big game.

Kind of sad isn’t it? You pay for a tool to help you but it doesn’t work as intended.

Should I start Jarvis Landry @CIN today? Or roll with Alston Jefferey vs DET on Sunday?

    • geo2209

Well with Slay shadowing Alshon (who now listed his hammy to go with his knee on the injury report) it’s safer to go Jarvis tonight. But I’d temper expectations on the road with Tannehill.

        Thanks dude

    Jeremy Maclin or Jamison Crowder?

    • Nicholas Miller

Maclin @ Pittsburgh and Crowder home vs. Cleveland

      • geo2209

I’d go Crowder although there is the risk that Matt Jones runs all over them since the Browns can be attacked via land or air but it’s a bit easier through the air. Pitt is giving up the 6th least fantasy points to WRs so I’d be a bit hesitant to use Maclin on the road, especially after his dud last week.WR/CB chart shows Cockrell who is the #22 CB and the other sides boasts William Gay who is just as good.

        • Ernesto Javier

I kind of like Matt Jones this week which made me downgrade crowder whos not a wr1 on his team. Maclin is the wr1 on his team and is projected to do well this week. Yes he had a down week in week 3 which in my opinion is more reason to play him in DFS because people are low on him. I’m also starting him in one of my season long leagues. my2cents

      • DEV00100000

I like both this week, but I think you’ll regret benching Maclin the most of the two.

should I start john brown or fitzgerald ? week4 vs RAMS DEF

    • Ernesto Javier

Brown hasnt had a good game this year which makes me think hes due for one of those might be a good play in a gpp tournament in DFS. In cash or season long I would go with fitz. my2cents

  • DEV00100000

How is Odell going up against the VIKINGS SECONDARY a good matchup? Lol, maybe this guy didn’t watch them shut out Kelvin Benjamin last week.

  • Tim

Should I start Mike Wallace at home against Raiders DEF, or start Brandin Cooks @ San Diego DEF
    PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!

    K Benjamin, T Benjamin, Robinson, Baldwin…who sits???
