Five last-round picks who could be your best-ball savior

While we all patiently await for seasonal league drafts to commence in August as dynasty rookie draft season winds down, one of the best ways to keep your finger on the current values of players are MFL best-ball drafts. For the uninformed, best-ball is a league format where you only participate in the draft and then your optimal lineup is automatically set every week.

Whereas in redraft leagues volatile players are undesirable due to the necessity of making weekly lineup decisions, high variance isn’t necessarily a bad thing in best-ball. Assuming you build a complete team with proper depth, you can reap all the upside of players without feeling much of the downside.

As a result, later-round picks take on more importance in these leagues as high-risk, high-reward players can have a significant impact on any given week. Below are five such players that I am targeting in the last few rounds of MFL drafts, all of whom have ADPs in the final round or later.

Paul Perkins, RB, New York Giants (ADP: 179, 20th round)

One of my favorite rookies in dynasty, Perkins also has the potential to be a difference-maker down the stretch this year in what projects to be a high-powered Giants offense. The rookie hasn’t been seeing much love in the fantasy community, mostly because of a seemingly crowded depth chart of Rashad Jennings, Shane Vereen and Andre Williams in front of the fifth-round pick.

It doesn’t take a fantasy analyst to tell you that Williams isn’t very good at football, and Vereen has never been more than a passing-down specialist, albeit an effective one. That leaves the 31-year-old Jennings, who beat reporters have been projecting for a workhorse role.
