Five fantasy defenses to should avoid in 2016

Some of these defenses are getting drafted too highly. Some are just bad streaming options. Either way, Brandon Marianne Lee has reasons to avoid these.

Five fantasy defenses to should avoid in 2016

Earlier this week, I went into the characteristics that make up a top-10 defense. Fantasy points are scored with turnovers, pressure and not allowing the other team to score. The best teams excel at those skills.

However, most of us still opt to stream. We pick the defense going up against the rookie or backup quarterback. Or maybe we decide to target the defense going up against a wild gunslinger, or a running back with a fumbling problem.

There are a variety of scenarios that could entice a streamer of defenses, but there are still teams you should avoid. Some teams still cannot generate turnovers and/or get to the quarterback no matter how good the matchup. Even though they faced a rookie quarterback, Brian Hoyer and Brandon Weeden a combined five times over the course of the season, the Saints were only a top-10 defense three times in 2015; they only made the top 10 in one of those five favorable matchups.

Since most defenses go off the board at the end of the draft, and most people stream defenses when possible, here is one team that’s ADP is too high and four teams that I would exercise caution before streaming. All ADP calculations are based on

Too high a price

Seattle Seahawks (current ADP: 110, No. 3 DEF)

Seattle D

I am not going to tell you anything bad about the Seattle Seahawks defense. I can’t. Last year they allowed the fewest points per game (17.3) and they are incredibly consistent. They logged 37 sacks in both 2014 and 2015. In 2014, they put up 13 interceptions, and followed that up with 14 in 2015. They recovered 11 fumbles and scored two defensive touchdowns in 2014 and recovered nine fumbles and scored three defensive touchdowns the following season. You know exactly what you are going to get when you draft the Seahawks defense.
