Colts: Costanzo off to his best start

PFF-headlinesColts’ left tackle Anthony Costanzo was a 2011 first-round pick (the Kerry Collins/Curtis Painter season), but has yet to live up to his high draft position. Is this the year that changes?

Six weeks in and he currently owns the seventh-best pass blocking grade among his NFL tackles. Six games isn’t a significant sample size, but when this young 2014 campaign is compared with the first games of Costanzo’s previous years, improvement is apparent.

Costanzo was injured 11 snaps into the fourth game of his rookie year and missed some time, but in the first full six games he played in he was beaten for 2 sacks, 3 hits and 9 hurries. Things didn’t get any better in the first six contests if 2012 (4 sacks, 4 hits, 15 hurries) or 2013 (2 sacks, 2 hits, and 14 hurries).

Fast forward to 2014 and Costanzo has conceded no sacks, 3 QB hits and 11 hurries.  He has also faced some fearsome pass rushers so far including DeMarcus Ware (2 hurries allowed), Trent Cole (a single hurry), and Terrell Suggs (2 hits).

So far, the numbers suggest that Costanzo could be finally coming into his own.
