CB Rookie Report

EJ GainesIn this article I focus on ten rookie cornerbacks who are making a big fantasy impact on your wide receivers. Whether they are shutting them down or getting torched, these rookies are playing a big role in the success of your fantasy team.

Jason Verrett was arguably the best rookie cornerback before suffering a season ending injury. Verrett isn’t the only first-round cornerback to be affected by injuries. The Bengals Darqueze Dennard has been limited to just 49 snaps and didn’t make the list. You never know, the next Richard Sherman, Darrelle Revis or Joe Haden could be on this list.

E.J. Gaines, CB, Rams

2014 Advanced Stats
Targeted: 57
Catches allowed: 35
Yards per target: 6.91
Incompletions forced percentage: 33%
TDs allowed: 1
QB rating against: 80.6

My Two Cents: Not only has E.J. Gaines started every game as a rookie, but he has almost played every defensive snap for the Rams. Many probably considered Gaines a long shot to make the final roster; but here he is outplaying every other rookie at his position. If he continues to improve he could have a couple of Pro Bowls in his future.

Kyle Fuller, CB, Bears

2014 Advanced Stats
Targeted: 51
Catches allowed: 31
Yards per target: 7.57
Incompletions forced percentage: 22%
TDs allowed: 2
QB rating allowed: 72.8

My Two Cents: I think most everyone thinks that Kyle Fuller is having a magical rookie season. This often happens with players that perform well in a nationally televised game. Fuller started his career with three interceptions in his first three games but he hasn’t had one since. In fact in his last four games quarterbacks are 11-13 for 124 yards and a touchdown. He is also allowing a quarterback rating of 115.7 during that stretch. Don’t get me wrong, Fuller is having a good rookie season, but it hasn’t been extraordinary. At best he is the second best rookie cornerback this season.
