As we did for wide receivers in this week's Advanced Targets, this edition of Advanced Touches will zoom out to look at how the running back position has fared through the first quarter of the season. We'll be focusing on the cumulative results for backs who've seen at least 25% of the snaps in their offenses. Many readers will already be familiar with the terminology used by PFF in discussing running back play, but our Week 1 article contains a full glossary and explanation.
Before giving you the full breakdown arranged by total touches, let's look at the leaders and stragglers by category.
Touches
Leader: Arian Foster (112) Runner-up: Marshawn Lynch (99)
Although not particularly efficient per touch, Foster and Lynch will continue to have clear RB1 value as their squads relentlessly run them into the ground.
Fantasy Points Per Touch (PPR)
Leader: C.J. Spiller (1.42) Runner-up: Ray Rice (1.02)
Stragglers: Beanie Wells (0.29), Mark Ingram (0.30)
Pleasant Surprise: Kevin Smith (0.97)
Spiller has been the most explosive player in the league this season, and Rice is always among the most efficient runners in the league. Kevin Smith’s numbers include a game against 49ers, so perhaps the Lions' self-evaluation has been rather poor.
