5 crazy good stats in college football

74 percent of Dalvin Cook’s 799 yards have come on runs of 15 or more yards

In 2014, Dalvin Cook had the best freshman year for a running back in Florida State football history with 1,008 yards. He’s 209 yards away from that mark after only five games. Of his 799 rushing yards, 591 (74 percent) of them have come on runs of more than 15 yards. That is the highest breakaway percentage (PFF Signature Stat) of all running backs in the country.

This is even more impressive when you look at the defenses Cook has faced. All five opponents through six weeks have a positive rushing defense grade totaling +145.7. Cook will face another tough defense when Louisville comes to town on Saturday. The matchup to watch will be Cook against Louisville’s run-stuffing linebacker Devonte Fields (+11.3).

Chad Kelly has been accurate on 69 percent of his deep passes

A deep pass is defined as throwing a pass 20 yards in the air. Of the 29 deep passes Ole Miss’ QB has thrown in six games, 19 have been complete and one was dropped (good for 69 percent accuracy). This is 25 percentage points higher than the national average of 44 percent.

What makes this stat even more crazy is when you look at the rest of Kelly’s passes. Kelly is first in the nation on deep pass accuracy, but 46th in overall accuracy. On passes over 20 yards, Kelly has a grade of +11.3. On passes under 20 yards, he grades out to -6.8. It’s pretty amazing to have splits that far apart. Future opponents might want to consider moving the safeties back a few yards — cornerbacks and linebackers for that matter, too.

Naashon Hughes has 0 missed tackles in 184 rushing snaps

In 184 rushing snaps, the sophomore Texas linebacker has made every tackle when given the opportunity. This is no small task given the schedule that he’s played so far. Texas has faced two of PFF College’s top ten offenses in TCU (+40) and Notre Dame (+31.9). After playing mostly defensive end in 2014, Hughes is making the transition to linebacker look smooth.

Royce Freeman had 181 yards after contact in Week 6

Of the 246 yards Oregon’s sophomore running back Royce Freeman racked up in Week 6, 181 of them came after contact (74 percent). Only five running backs in the country had more total rushing yards than Freeman had after the first defender had a crack at him. Through six weeks, Freeman leads FBS football by causing 41 missed tackles. He currently ranks third in total rushing in the country with 859 yards and has scored a touchdown in each of his six games. His total grade so far is +12.3. Freeman is a very powerful runner with ideal NFL size (5-11, 230 pounds). This type of production matched with his frame is what NFL teams look for in power backs.

Jalen Myrick (CB, Minnesota) has the lowest opposing quarterback rating in the country at 22.8

Opposing quarterbacks are having a hard time figuring out Minnesota cornerback Jalen Myrick. When throwing at him, they combine for a total passer rating of 22.8. That is the lowest opposing rating in the country among qualified cornerbacks. Myrick has allowed a total of 14 receptions on 181 snaps through six games. His combined grade for the season is +14.7. One of the quarterbacks that tested Myrick this year was TCU stud Trevone Boykin.

The Georgia native is making a name for himself in a Minnesota defensive backfield that already boasts two NFL prospects in Eric Murray and Briean Boddy-Calhoun. Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr (+3.9) will get the next shot at Myrick on Saturday in Minneapolis.

Oh, and one more thing…

Ezekiel Elliott is still pass blocking at 100 percent efficiency (46 pass-block snaps). He is the only perfect pass-blocking running back in the country.
