49ers: Perrish Cox continues to impress

PFF-headlinesIf you were going to hand out a team MVP award after the first five weeks of the season in San Francisco one of the leading candidates would be cornerback Perrish Cox.

Cox, who had been released by the 49ers during the middle of last season (and again late by Seattle) before being brought back by San Francisco in the postseason, has stepped in admirably at left cornerback after Tramaine Brock injured his toe in the first quarter of the 49ers season opener in Dallas.

Since moving into the starting lineup, Cox has earned a +5.8 overall grade which ranks fifth among cornerbacks, and his 28.6 passer rating allowed is tops in the league.

Cox has made game-clinching interceptions in back-to-back weeks, and his three picks are tied for the league lead. In addition, he is allowing just a 46.7% catch rate when targeted.

With Brock scheduled to return to health in the next few weeks, the 49ers will have a decision to make in the secondary.

Have to imagine they’ll move Culliver to the slot whenever Brock comes back with Ward moving down to the 4th CB. Either that or all 3 shares snaps in the 2 spots.

I could see them moving Culliver to the third corner.. But not necessarily as the slot cb.. Remember when they were starting C Rodgers and T Brown… And Culliver would come in in nickel situations. but when he did he would go outside and Rodgers would move to the slot? I can see that. I would want Cullivers speed on the outside.
