Notes

  • After cutting left tackle Anthony Collins following a disappointing first season in Tampa Bay, the Buccaneers are now set to start two rookies on that offensive line. Left tackle Donovan Smith, and right guard Ali Marpet form the final two-fifths of an offensive line with three players we have rated as average or above in Evan Dietrich-Smith, Logan Mankins and Demar Dotson. How the two rookies perform will be key, particularly Smith at tackle.
  • While Mike Evans and Vincent Jackson are both good, or high quality starters, the team really needs a third option to step up. Louis Murphy hasn’t shown much outside of the occasional flash, but hopes will be high that rookie Kenny Bell has something to offer on the field.
  • The defensive backfield remains a mixed bag, with new signing Sterling Moore joining Alterraun Verner as the only two players we have rated as anything above average. At safety Bradley McDougald had a solid enough season, but both Major Wright and Chris Conte graded negatively a year ago.
  • Despite some questions about how Bruce Carter will perform in the middle, the Buccaneers’ linebackers are arguably the strongest unit on their defense. Lavonte David remains one of the best 4-3 linebackers in the game but the surprise package is Danny Lansanah. Our 16th-highest graded player at the position in 2014, he was solid both against the run and in coverage.

another team with zero depth at OL, better hope those two rooks pan out and quickly

if tampa bay’s offensive line is so bad why do they have the #2 leading rusher in total yards and #1 in YPC in the person of doug martn? according to profootballfocus they have 2 very high quality vets, 2 rookies and one player of average quality. both their analysis of the O line and the rushing stats tend to refute you.

wow, 7 month revisionary hindsight, must be beyond crystal clear huh? doug martin’s grade is partially due to how much he (exceptionally) out performs his blocking, btw, which you would know if you read anything else here besides preseason comments

Just for fun, I’d be interested in seeing the defensive ratings for just after the Buc’s bye week since their D really improved after it (I think FBO listed them at a top 10 unit after their bye).

Bruce Carter is a really good player. AT least above average. Ive watched every game of his career and his athleticism at the LB position rivals anyone in the league. His weakness was coverage but he really stepped that up last year. He makes some dumb mistakes on occasion but he really started to grow out of that last season. The Bucs have a better D-line than the Boys did last year so that will help him. I dont know if there’s anyone better to learn from than David. I expect him to blow everyone away this year

  • Dalen Erickson

Bruce is definitely more suited to play SAM but he played all 3 spots for the Boys over his career.
He needs to be better utilized as a pass rusher. Had we blitzed him more he could’ve easily racked up 6 sacks

Question for the folks at PFF. If Demar Dotson from Tampa Bay is rated by PFF the #3 right tackle in the NFL, why on your depth chart does he only have a good color green? If he truly is #3 in the NFL should that not be elite of at least high quality? Can you please change the depth chart, it would be greatly appreciated!

  • rob roy

Alterraun Verner is rated #7 overall for CB. Should he not be rated high quality? How does PFF come up with there rating on the depth charts?

  • djomintion

how can lavonte david be elite and not make the top 101 players?

    • Dildo Baggins

Top 101 is based on 2014 alone. These are based on their careers.
