Notes

  • The only question mark on the offensive line at this stage is at center, where Russ Bodine heads into his second season. Up and down in his rookie season, Bodine showed flashes at points, but finished the season with a negative grade both as a run blocker and in pass protection, leading to him finishing 2014 as our 33rd highest graded center. Youth is on his side, but he’ll need to improve in 2015.

  • The Bengals wide receivers are top heavy, with A.J. Green in that elite bracket, Marvin Jones a more than competent player opposite him, but a lot of question marks beyond that. Mohammed Sanu, Brandon Tate and Denarius Moore have each shown flashes in their careers, but never anything more than that.

  • Bringing back Michael Johnson looks to be a smart move for the Bengals, adding to a defensive line that already had two high quality players in Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins. The concern with this unit however, is with Domata Peko, who’ll start next to Atkins once again. Peko finished 2014 as our second lowest graded defensive tackle, after being our fourth lowest graded at the position in 2013.

  • This looks like it will be the year we finally see significant snaps from former first round draft pick Dre Kirkpatrick. Three years into his career, the 283 snaps we saw from him in the 2014 regular season and playoffs are the most we’ve seen from him in a single season. There were some positive signs, and he impressed in two of the final three games of the season, but how he handles a bigger workload will be key, with last year’s first round pick Darqueze Dennard, rookie Josh Shaw and undrafted free agent Troy Hill all looking for playing time as well.

With so many teams continually trotting players you guys grade poorly, do you think this could be due to them grading players athletic ability, splash plays, and technique rather than pure production as you guys do?

    • Chris

Lockerroom influence is a big factor for teams as well. If you’re looking at Peko, he’s been the leader of the defense so years now. Not sure why he can’t lead from a backup position, but here’s to hoping Sims plays the run well enough to steal some snaps.

Good point Chris. I didn’t consider that

  • Dalen Erickson

I think getting Johnson back was a good move. Hes a talented player, even though he has taken a few steps back when most of us thought he was a rising star

    How is Hill average?
