WR/CB Matchup Roundup – Week 12

colstonI was four for four in my matchup predictions this week. Normally I have to make excuses as to why I was wrong, but not this week! Both of the players I suggested you start had big weeks, and the two receivers I recommended you bench combined for one reception. Hopefully I can build off this week and stay perfect for week 13.

Marques Colston vs. Lardarius Webb

My key points: I stated in my matchup article that I recommend starting Marques Colston for the first time this season. I expected him to get more targets than he did, but he still finished with strong numbers. Colston hasn’t been productive this year but given the circumstances I had a strong feeling he would produce on Monday night.

I thought Colston would see more than four targets this week with Brandin Cooks injured. Only 11% of quarterback Drew Brees’ pass attempts were to Colston. Kenny Still was actually the biggest winner from Cooks being out as he saw a season high nine targets. Even though it didn’t happen how I planned, Colston still had his best game of the season. Colston caught all four of his targets for 82 yards and a touchdown. If you plugged him into your flex, you have to be happy with that performance.

Brees only targeted Lardarius Webb three times on Monday. Webb allowed catches on all three of his targets which went for 77 yards. Brees had no problem moving the ball down the field and didn’t need to focus on Webb. Four Ravens cornerbacks played in the game and Brees was 18-21 for 288 yards and a touchdown while targeting them. Sadly, Webb probably had the best game for the Ravens cornerback unit who desperately misses Jimmy Smith.
