College football is back. The bands, the crowds, the dream of what could be. Lee Corso’s goofy mascot schtick, the pre-game signs, Kirk Herbstreit’s questionable enthusiasm and Desmond Howard’s goofy laugh – they’re all back.
With the start of a new season comes the promise of new beginnings. Maybe last year we put too much faith in O.J. Howard or Christian Hackenberg, but this year we get a fresh start and a chance to make amends with the fantasy football gods.

As the title of this column suggests, these picks won’t be the obvious choices every time. There is a reason Ohio State running back Ezekiel Elliott will be one of the highest-priced running backs each week, but you won’t find his name in this column.
