Vikings: Tom Johnson continues strong play.

PFF-headlinesIn an early season surprise, journeyman defensive tackle Tom Johnson is the 2nd highest-graded player on the Minnesota defense.

Johnson even outranks the Vikings two recent draft picks in defensive tackles Shamar Stephen and Sharrif Floyd.  His +6.5 overall grade includes a team leading +4.6 pass rush grade and a +0.8 run grade as well. He currently ranks 4th in Defensive Tackle/ Nose Tackle Pass Rushing Productivity,  a result of his  11 total pressures in just 93 pass rushing attempts.

Johnson has also performed well in the run game with limited opportunities (only 35 snaps). He currently has an 11.4% Run Stop Percentage and four total stops. That would rank him in the Top 10 with enough qualifying snaps.

The Vikings like to keep a steady rotation at DT with Johnson, Floyd, Stephen, and Linval Joseph all seeing over 140 snaps each. Johnson currently averages around 25 plays per game, but given his pass rushing ability and all-around performance this year, the Vikings might be pressed to consider giving him more playing time.
