Vikings: Chase Ford seizing his opportunity

PFF-headlinesWhen Kyle Rudolph went down with injury in Week 3, Minnesota Vikings fans were concerned about the loss of production from the tight end spot. They knew Rhett Ellison’s solid run blocking would continue (+5.3 on the season), but also knew they would need help in the passing game. That help came in the form of Chase Ford.

After starting the season slowly, Ford has graded out at +5.6 over the last four games, a mark that ranks fifth during that span, grading positively both as a receiver (+2.4) and as a run blocker (+2.4). Ford has been particularly successful from the slot, a fact that the Vikings have been quick to exploit, running 61.0% of his routes from there this season. While in the slot, Ford has caught 15 of 17 targeted passes for 153 yards and one touchdown; Ford’s 88.2% Slot Catch Rate leads all tight ends this season.

Rudolph should be returning from injury soon, potentially as soon as this week, but considering Ford’s recent performances, look for the Vikings to find ways to keep him on the field.
