Vikings: Berger a bright spot on the Oline

PFF-headlinesBefore the season many thought the Vikings had the potential to have one of the better offensive lines in football. Injuries and some underperformance have flipped the script on the Vikings and Matt Kalil  has been the only Viking to make every start on the offensive line.

One of the bright spots has been the play of veteran Joe Berger. Berger has started the last six games at right guard and even played 56 snaps at center early in the year backing up John Sullivan. Berger’s +3.0 overall grade is good for 22nd among guards.  His only been flagged once all season, a false start penalty last week.

His pass blocking grade of -2.5 and Pass Block Efficiency rating of 96.1 are not stellar by any means, but rank right around the middle of the pack. When defenders beat him for a pressure (he’s allowed 11) it’s usually on inside moves (7).  He’s only been beaten on a bullrush once.

Run blocking has been his strength and his +5.5 grade ranks 14th  among guards and includes a +2.3 day vs. the Panthers, where he did well in particular taking on Luke Kuechly.
