Usage data says DeMarco Murray still legit RB1

Throughout the season, I will be monitoring the various running back timeshares and analyzing their touch/snap distributions with hopes of projecting reasonable expectations for committee running backs and their contingent fantasy value.

Assigning importance to preseason performances can be dicey. The games should not be viewed from a macro perspective (final score), but rather as a collection of small samples. While studying these micro samples, you can catch a glimpse of what is in store for the regular season.

How to decipher RB usage data

Snap count data is useful when deciphering timeshares, but players don’t receive fantasy points for simply being on the field. The fact that DeMarco Murray currently trails Kenjon Barner and Ryan Mathews in preseason snaps doesn’t suggest that Murray is in any danger of losing his grip on the starting job.

We can manipulate the snap data to reveal the true nature of the Eagles’ intentions for their backfield.
