Trend Spotting: Cutler's Stock on the Rise

37-jay-cutlerGiven all of the sacks, interceptions and overall bad decision-making that have plagued him over the past few years, it's hard to believe that back in 2008, Jay Cutler was a top-5 quarterback (by both PFF and fantasy standards) for a Denver Broncos team that appeared to be on the verge of Super Bowl contention. A lot's certainly gone wrong for Cutler in that time period, beginning with Josh McDaniels' tumultuous arrival as the Broncos' head coach in 2009. The trade to Chicago seemed to help, but atrocious pass protection left Cutler shell-shocked for much of his first four seasons in the Windy City, including a 2010 season in which he was sacked a horrifying 52 times.

This season, the arrival of “quarterback whisperer” Marc Trestman as head coach and the unpublicized but critical fortification of the Bears' offensive line has Cutler thriving as he hasn't since then-rookie Ryan Clady was protecting his blind side in the Mile High City.
