As we countdown towards free agency more veteran players are confirming their retirement with former Titans’ left tackle Michael Roos the latest to call time on his career. Consistently one of the league’s most underrated players, Roos earned a positive grade in all eight seasons that we have graded at PFF, peaking with a +35.2 overall grade in 2008.
In the last eight seasons, Roos only finished with a pass protection grade below zero twice (-0.9 in 2013; -7.5 in 2010) while ending up third in our pass protection grades in 2008 (+15.5) and 2012 (+17.8). Roos is one of the rare players who goes out without seeing his performance level drop away significantly, even earning a positive grade in both pass protection and run blocking in his final, injury-shortened, season much like Jordan Gross a year ago.
After releasing Michael Oher last week the Titans are left thin on the ground at offensive tackle with last year’s first-round pick Taylor Lewan (359 snaps, +2.2 overall) returning from injury to start at left tackle. Roos’ consistent performances in the last decade have ensured that Lewan has big shoes to fill, but (aside from one rough start against the Eagles) the former Michigan Wolverine gave early signs that the Titans have their heir apparent who they hope will start for as long and perform as consistently for them as Roos did.
