Ryan Tannehill will get back on track in Week 2

For those who missed this column last season, welcome to the Matchups Machine, which narrows down ideal matchups from around the league on a weekly basis using the tools we have available at PFF, the Las Vegas odds, and insight from yours truly.

PFF has all the tools to break down each individual matchup. Do you want to know how your wide receiver is going to do? Well, if he lines up as a split end on 90 percent of his snaps, we can pinpoint which cornerback he will be matching up with for those snaps. We can also tell you how that cornerback has performed.

Of course, as was the case last season, this column will become more accurate as the season goes on and we compile more grades for the players and get a feel for the tendencies and overall strengths/weaknesses of the 32 teams.

The goal of this column is to help you with those tricky decisions in year-long leagues, but also to help you narrow down your best options in daily fantasy leagues. You will see a mix of big-name players and fringe starters. Without further ado, let’s get into it.

Ryan Tannehill @ Jaguars

In Week 1, the Dolphins offense looked out of sync in large part due to the pressure tacked on by the Redskins front seven. The Redskins ate up the undermatched Dolphins offensive line to the tune of 16 total pressures and four sacks. Only three teams graded out with a better overall pass-rush grade in Week 1 than the Redskins.

Agree 100% on Tannehill. Had some bad throws last week, but I think he takes a step forward in his career this year, and it starts with this game. See lots of upside there!

If they would just unleash Parker all would be well in the world

  • Kyle

awesome article, love the insight. very helpful in making lineup decisions. thanks!

So, start Tannehill over Brady in a 6 point per TD format?

    • Dan Schneier

To me, this is a definite yes. I am also a slave to the matchup, sometimes to a fault. Brady’s OL will do a much better job holding up against pressure than Luck’s did in Week 1, but he will also have to deal with the return of DT Marcell Dareus. Obviously Tannehill doesn’t have a Gronk to work with in the red zone, but I think he’ll find himself down in that area of the field two or three more times. He showed a nice connection with potential RZ threat Jordan Cameron last week as well.

      • Andy

Thanks for the thoughtful reply. I am hesitant because I feel like the Bills will come down to earth a bit and they have been in the headlines pissing off the Pats all week long. Brady has been successful against D’s that have humbled others. That being said. I drafted both QB’s for a reason so there lies my quandary.

        • Andy

I also have less faith in matchups this early in the season

          • Dan Schneier

@[email protected]_EiZCfxDJFg:disqusI can certainly understand having less faiths in the matchups this early, but you should have faith in that Bills defense under Rex Ryan. Especially because they are getting their best defensive player back. It’s always tough to bench a bonafide QB1 like Brady, but I think this is one week where it makes a lot of sense to do that.

          • Brian V Streeter

Rex Ryan cant stop Brady from throwing two tds to gronk n edelman I guarantee that much.

      • Brian V Streeter

DOnt bench Brady! As a Tannehill owner I have been contemplating starting Mariota~! In the end I am going with Tannehill but if I had Brady id start him. Jags offense makes it likely the phins will run more than usual.

      • Brian V Streeter

He has Cameron and Parker now if Philbin would just get his head out of his butt and use the talented WR we would be signing praise of drafting Tannehill. Patience I guess.

  • Shawn

I must say I enjoyed the article and try reading all the write ups on the site. Doing this often leaves me confused because of contradictions between them. For example, the QB streaming article states not to stream Winston this week, but here it leads you to believe that he could possibly carve up a horrible secondary (which before reading any write up I was thinking too, actually he’s currently locked into my LU’s as my QB, especially if Evans is on the field) but I must say, now I’m having my doubts….

    • Dan Schneier

Hey @Shawn thanks for reading. We have a lot of talented writers on PFF, and at times, we will simply disagree with each other. The beauty of fantasy football is that everyone sees a situation, a player’s talent, etc. differently. If we were all thinking the same thing, it wouldn’t be very fun. My advice to you would be to judge how each writer comes to his conclusion. Using the facts presented, is the case stronger to play or sit player X.

  • Dan

Mariota or tannehill for week 2?

    • Dan Schneier

Thanks for reading Dan. For me, it’s Tannehill. I think he’ll see more plays and get more chances in the red zone. Mariota looked great, no doubt, but that TB defense had real issues in the secondary. I think with Joe Haden, CLE can do a better job eliminating Kendall Wright and with Delanie Walker likely to sit, TEN is down to guys like Hunter/Douglas and maybe DGB to carry the load.

    • Brian V Streeter

Got the same dilemna. I drafted Tannehill as my starter and snuck away with a W week 1 so I am rolling with him again. Mariota will get the start week 3 vs Indy fo show!

  • Kale Kowalski

This is Fantastic insight Dan. Looking forward to much more this season. What about Tannehill vs. Romo? thank you in advance!

  • Ray Francisco

I’m starting Matt Ryan over Tom Brady this weekend. Hope I don’t regret it. This will prolly be one of the few times I bench him.
