Georgia head coach surprised some when he named quarterback Greyson Lambert as the Bulldogs' starter for Week 1. A graduate transfer student, Lambert had struggled in his time at Virginia and had to fight off Brice Ramsey — the Bulldogs' 2014 backup — and Faton Bauta for the job.
Lambert is unquestionably the most experienced quarterback on the roster, and that should be an asset, but his play for the Cavaliers was inconsistent, leading to his benching. His 69.5 accuracy percentage ranked 63rd out of 135 qualifying quarterbacks, while his 74.1 overall rating marks him out as an adequate starter.
An adequate starter may be all the Bulldogs need him to be. They have a strong offensive line, talent at receiver and one of the best running backs in football in Nick Chubb. Georgia's potent ground attack will open things up for the passing game by forcing teams to respect the run.
Lamberts' NFL QB rating improved to 100.9 with play-action passes last year, and that was on a Virginia offense lacking the threat of Chubb or the cadre of talented rushers that Georgia can call upon this year.
Virginia's offense has struggled mightily in recent seasons, making it hard for any player to perform at their best. Lambert will have much more talent to work with at Georgia, and might raise his game as a result. If not, he might find Ramsey and Bauta breathing down his neck.
