I closed my introduction last week hoping the retrospective today wouldn’t be too humbling. Instead, I open this week hoping not to get too carried away with delusions of grandeur.
I hoped a pair of my three picks last week would have been comparable to other starting quarterbacks and finished in the top 12. But last week’s picks finished 2, 3, and 5 in fantasy points among quarterbacks, according to PFF.
And to remind you: none of these players were on half or more of ESPN fantasy leagues’ rosters. There’s a better than 50-50 chance you could have picked one up before the week began, not that it would have been advisable at the time if you had a quarterback like Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning or Cam Newton — each of whom finished with significantly fewer points than three players I selected.
While I’m pleased with the results, as it may have moved me closer to earning your trust — and hopefully readership — on a regular basis, I consider the results more an indication of the power of considering matchups. While I think that all three of the players I selected last week will continue to post terrific weeks in the future, a significant portion of their value is derived from the defenses they face. That’s why they were available to stream in the first place. While you won’t see two them on the list this week, one (unsurprisingly) returns.
