Redskins: Polumbus benched in favor of Compton

PFF-headlinesIt’s no secret that Redskins right tackle Tyler Polumbus has struggled heavily this year. Despite a dismal 2012 season (-24.6 overall), his first full one with the team, he was able to turn things around in 2013 (+14.0.)

This season he’s returned to his 2012 form – currently ranked 65th out 72 tackles with a -13.2 overall grade. He’s given up eight sacks so far, tied with Matt Kalil for the most among tackles. He’s not providing much help in the run game either, with ‘red’ grades as a run blocker in four of his seven games.

Today Head Coach Jay Gruden announced that 2012 sixth-round pick Tom Compton will replace Polumbus as the starter at RT against Dallas this week.  Compton has played as an extra tight end this season and swing tackle.

He’s played LT on 17 snaps in relief of Trent Williams and 29 snaps at RT.   Most of those RT snaps came in last week’s win where he rotated with Polumbus in the second half, allowing no pressure in 12 pass blocking attempts.
