Ravens: Will Hill emerges at the right time

PFF-headlinesDespite boasting a front seven full of standout performers (Haloti Ngata, Pernell McPhee, C.J. Mosley and Elvis Dumervil have all been among the best at their respective positions), the Baltimore Ravens defense has been somewhat limited by an injury ravaged, and inconsistent secondary. With the loss leading cornerback Jimmy Smith (+7.0 coverage grade) to injured reserve, the Ravens definitely need others to step up in the secondary.

With that in mind, the return from suspension of safety Will Hill has been perfectly timed. Particularly so if he can recapture the form he displayed with the Giants in 2013, when his +15.9 overall grade was the third-best among all safeties, with Hill playing well against both run (+5.4) and pass (+10.4). After shaking off some rust as a rotational backup, Hill has started the last two games at safety for the Ravens, pushing Matt Elam into a slot role.

Since returning, Hill has recorded a +4.0 overall grade, eighth-best among all safeties in that period and conceded just 0.49 Yards per Cover Snap, and is once again grading positively against both run (+2.3) and pass (+1.4). It's vital for the Ravens defense that Hill continues to play at this level.
