Ravens: Canty shows his value

PFF-headlinesSharing a defense with big names like Haloti Ngata, Terrell Suggs, and Elvis Dumervil, a solid run-stopping defensive end often gets lost in the cracks. Chris Canty might not put up the gaudy pass rushing numbers, but despite missing four weeks with a wrist injury he has done enough to grade +3.9 against the run, which ranks fifteenth out of all 3-4 DEs.

Canty has saved his best form for the last four weeks, during which he has recorded a +5.7 grade against the run, second-best among 3-4 DEs. Canty's seven total run stops give him a 14.9% Run Stop Percentage, which ties for the league-best among 3-4 ends during that four-game stretch.

With one sack and five total pressures on the season giving him a lowly 2.1 Pass Rushing Productivity, Canty doesn’t provide much in the way of a pass rush, however his value as a run stuffer has proven vital in the absence of the suspended Ngata. Canty picked up an ankle injury and was unable to train prior to the Ravens Week 16 defeat in Houston, so it was no surprise to see him turn in a -0.6 performance against the run. The Ravens will hope he is in better shape to face the Browns, as they make one final push for a playoff spot
