Rams: Davis doing a job .... except when blitzed

PFF-headlinesDespite starting in just his second NFL game last Sunday against the Cowboys, Rams quarterback Austin Davis holds the league’s highest completion percentage (72.3%) and 6th best PFF QB Rating. Unlike many young quarterbacks, Davis’ high completion percentage is not the product of him checking down to short, safe throws in high volume. He ranks fifth in both yards per attempt (8.02) and percentage yards in the air (64.5) even while having more attempts than a few of the players ahead of him.

However, like many quarterbacks (young ones especially), Davis has shown a tendency to make less than stellar decisions when facing NFL blitzes. Without the blitz, Davis has posted a +4.2 overall grade, 3:1 touchdown to interception ratio (not including Jared Cook’s big drop), and 108.5 QB Rating. Turn the table, though, and you see his completion percentage sink to 58.8%, an overall grade of -1.6, 2:2 TD to INT ratio, and 53.0 QB rating.

Fortunately for Davis, his first two opponents as a starter are not known for blitzing that often (only 29 out of 100 dropbacks). But he can be sure to see more of it if this trend continues.
