Punter Rankings – Week 3

sam-kochIt didn’t take long for Ryan Malone’s honeymoon with the Jets to come to an end. Right after Malone posted Week Two’s second-best fantasy performance, he was let go in favor or Ryan Quigley. Given the state of the Jets’ offense, Quigley should be a high-performing fantasy option as well, and if he can actually punt better than Malone, he’ll be an elite option moving forward.

Ironically, the punter going against Malone last Thursday night – the Patriots’ Ryan Allen – has quickly emerged as a top-notch option in his own right, at least for as long as it takes for Tom Brady to get into synch with his young receivers. It’s generally not a great idea to target a fantasy punter on a high-performing offense, but at least to this point, that’s not what the Pats have been. By midseason, Allen’s fantasy value will dip a bit, but his pedigree (two-time Ray Guy winner) suggests that he could be a fixture in New England for many years to come.

A fun punting match-up will take place in Dallas this Sunday, when the Rams’ Johnny Hekker and the Cowboys’ Chris Jones take aim at the megalithic AT&T Stadium scoreboard. If there’s a prop bet in Vegas for whether the scoreboard will be struck in a regular season game, Sunday would be a good game to try, particularly if the Dallas defense continues its stingy ways and Tony Romo is slowed by his bruised ribs and the Rams’ fearsome pass rush.

In Baltimore, two grizzled veterans will be going at it, with the Ravens’ Sam “You Send Me” Koch taking on former Raiders legend Shane Lechler (now of the Texans). The Ravens’ defense is nowhere near as formidable as its reputation would suggest, and if Arian Foster and Ben Tate can keep the chains moving, Lechler’s opportunities will be quite limited. Koch’s been a solid fantasy option to date, and if the Ravens struggle to move the ball against J.J. Watt, Brian Cushing and the rest of the Texans’ star-studded defense, he could yield a top-5 performance.
